Between 1912 and 1951, noted chemist Dr. Albert C. Barnes assembled one of the most impressive art collections in the world. With an initial focus on impressionist, post-impressionist, and early modern European paintings, Dr. Barnes’ interests expanded to include African art, Native American pottery and jewelry, Pennsylvania German furniture, American avant-garde painting, antiques, and even wrought-iron metalwork. Visit the Barnes Foundation to view his amazing collection and his equally impressive and unique display. Unlike most art collections displayed by period, genre, or media, the Barnes collection showcases his vision and genius of “ensembles” where seemingly disparate items are hung together based on visual similarities. Here you’ll see masterpieces by Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso next to a door hinge, a spatula, a yarn spinner. Take a one-hour Highlights Tour or view this amazing collection on your own.
