The Haldeman Mansion is the birthplace of Samuel Steman Haldeman (1812-1880), internationally recognized Scientist, Educator, and Linguist. As a boy, he walked the mansion's adjacent Susquehanna River & Conoy Creek banks looking for shells. On the grounds of the Mansion, he began his lifelong journey of discovery. It is doubtful if Sam knew his home graced a river terrace created by ancient glacial melts or straddled a 15th Century Indian Village. Today, we know this. We know those who lived and labored here numbered among the Native Americans, the early fur traders; were officers in the French & Indian, Revolutionary and Civil Wars; and innovative 18th and 19th-century industrialists. At Locust Grove, you can peer thru a window or sit on a porch, overlooking an expansive river, hear the water's ripples and breathe in whiffs of its recognized Native American, U.S. Colonial, U.S. National, and U.S. Scientific heritages. Come, we would like to tell you more, enjoy the tranquil setting!
