It was fall 1777 and British troops had scored several major victories over the Continental Army, including the capture of Philadelphia. A small contingent of American soldiers manning Fort Mifflin just outside Philadelphia were charged with holding off the British Navy and its resupply ships at any cost. For six weeks, Fort Mifflin held the British at bay until mid-November when British Navy ships unleashed a torrent of cannon fire with more than 10,000 cannonballs fired at the small fort over a few short days, the largest bombardment of the Revolutionary War. Today, take a guided tour of the restored fort and see how it has proudly served the country through all major wars.
