This isolated 404-acre natural area contains several pristine bogs surrounded by hardwood forests with hemlock on the bog margins. The Natural Area is nestled on top of a plateau at 2,200 feet in elevation. The site is accessible by foot only. Use the well-marked, blue-blazed trail known as Sand Spring Cross Country Ski Trail. The 3-mile trail passes through a series of habitats. A wide variety of woodland plants can be found including carnivorous species. The wild remote area is fragile - please stay on the trail. The area is open year round to the public. Resident birds include Wild Turkey, Blue Jay, Dark-eyed Junco and Barred Owl. Watch for Yellow-rumped Warbler, Blue-headed Vireo and Eastern Phoebe in spring and summer.
