Pennsbury is the 43-acre plantation of William Penn. A monument to the founder of Pennsylvania, it includes the reconstructed Manor House, Bake and Brew, stable, outbuildings, formal and kitchen gardens and grounds. William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, planned and directed the construction of Pennsbury Manor, located on the Delaware River, 25 miles north of Philadelphia. It was his official residence during his second visit to Pennsylvania from 1699-1701. Hannah Callowhill Penn (1671-1726), head housekeeper May Lofty, cook Ann Nichols, contract washerwoman Elizabeth Seale and two enslaved women Sue and Pathenia, formed the core community of women who kept all aspects of life at William Penn's country estate functioning. Following her husband William's stroke, Hannah Penn became manager of the estate and performed all official functions.
